Review - The Wombats, London, Levis Ones To Watch @ ULU, 07.11.07

Glowsticks ? Checked.
Barely 18+ crowd ? Checked.
Klaxons ? Ch – wait. In spite of an obvious shared capillary craze, this is not James Klaxon at the mic, but a fierce hairy Wombat. No doubt is possible after hearing the tale announcing (and echoeing) "the Wombats, the Wombats, the Wombats ... "
The Wombats then, far from the emo hype, take the stage with absolute control. Hit singles are followed by hits-to-be, their pop-ish side taking a punk-ish turn live. Murph’s voice is not at its full potential, but Dan and Tord’s steady backup vocals make it works nonetheless.
Murph, introducing their mascot Cherub at one point, asks the crowd to cheer the furry beast by a "Cherub, we love you motherfucker !" – Oh, come on Murph, you don’t need to do that : it’s obvious people love that wombat. People love the Wombats. And if the band carries on delivering such a packed-with-energy mixed with fun-and-good-humor set, seems likely that 2008 will see the Wombats’ glorious pop-punk bury the emo mood.
