Review - The Dykeenies, London, Levis Ones To Watch @ ULU, 07.11.07Scottish band The Dykeenies are opening for the latest popunk sensation The Wombats at ULU London tonight. Pressure, you say ? Indeed, as The Wombats are one of the NME and the youth of the nation's favourite new band. So before they can dance to Joy Division, the kiddies they will have to dance to The Dykeenies. And what more can you ask than a fresh indie pop dancey band with catchy-as-hell songs to open for you ??? Especially when set opener is the lively and punchy The Panic, followed by debut single New Ideas, an anthemic hands-clapping hit which literally sets fire to the ULU young audience. The Dykeenies are a « mix between The Killers and Panic! At The Disco » says the NME. Come on the (e)N(e)ME(y), that was so easy and lazy. Surely you could have come up with better than that. Brian Henderson (vocals, keyboard) is no Brandon Flowers, because he can actually sing, and his voice is one of The Dykeenies strongest point and what makes them special. And even if the keyboard intro to Things You Cannot See could be mistaken for an intro to a Killers' song, that is where the comparison stops. Don't even get me started on P!atd or some rude words might come out off my laptop. Then comes Pick You Up, after which the album was named (Nothing Means Everything). It could easily be released as a single, just like almost every single Dykeenies song. They stick to the « keyboard intro/hands-clapping/catchy chorus » magic formula, and it does work (Clean Up Your Eyes, Waiting For Go). But, more importantly, there is no time out during a Dykeenies gig. And as soon as hit single Stitches is played, you can tell that a few fans have made it to the ULU tonight to see one of their favourite band, as they are singing along come the bridge (« ... still, I adore the taste of rain, and the bounce of bone on ground ... »). The crowd's reaction to set closer Waiting For Go is a sure sign that The Dykeenies have accomplished their mission : warming up the audience for The Wombats. So, all in all, as The Dykeenies would say, « it was quality » !
