Review - Kubichek!, New Slang at Kingston, The Works, 15.11.07Tonight is one of the few gigs Kubichek! are playing post-Al's departure for this year. The remaining band members told us hours prior to the gig that some of the older songs would never be played again (Hope Is Impossible, among others), leaving now room for brand new Kubichek! version 2.0's songs. Yet untitled for most of them, they have this upbeat danceable rhythm that makes a song Kubichek!'s. As Frog (bass) is now taking the singing duties, Graham is the fourth member of Kubichek!. The moment they hit the stage, you can feel that the four of them do want to keep up with the band, even after suffering the loss of a remarkable frontman and singer. Hits such as Stutter, Method-Acting and Not Enough Night still make it to the setlist though. Only can we regret the absence of Outwards, an instant dancefloor filler that would've probably made the (very) few kids here tonight dancing to sweat. However, new songs make up for it, especially the chaotic and brilliant set closer which sees Frog ending up the concert on his knees. But, as ambitious and full of good intentions as they probably are, their main weakness lies in their newly vocalist. Let's keep our hopes up though, because it takes time to become a good singer and to be comfortable and confident on stage, behind a mic. They've got the songs, now they just need their new vocalist to show what he can really do as lead singer. But for the moment, Al is terribly missed. JT. |
