Interview : Les Oeufs![]() Les Oeufs – would TLS be possibly talking about a worthy French band ? We’d love to - but we’re not. Les Oeufs are actually a British band, based in Brighton via Cambridge, Battle and Birmingham. So why such a weird name ? “When I was growing up, I was in a punk band and everything was slightly pretentious, cheesy or kinda laughable. Our drummer was called Eggy, so when we were laughing at pretentious bands, we thought that we would call ourselves the eggs, but in French, (Les Oeufs, then) as a kind of clash against pretentious names, because it sounds funny – we don’t even know how to pronounce it !” says frontman and guitarist Jonah Maddox, whose job in the band is to write all the lyrics. The music is built by all members – influenced by a wide range of music styles, from punk to reggae via The Beatles, they all learn from each other and complete each other. The result is a fresh indie-pop mixture dominated by Jonah’s rough voice – hard to believe him when he says he only discovered indie rock a little while ago ! It might be true though, as Les Oeufs don’t sound like any other modern band at the moment. CB.
